Proper washing and care can triple the life of yarn products. Different materials need different methods — never treat them all the same.
Washing wool
- Water: max 30°C — never hot (shrinks and distorts)
- Method: hand wash preferred, squeeze gently, never wring or rub hard
- Detergent: wool-specific or neutral detergent
- Drying: dry flat; hanging stretches the garment
- Never bleach, never tumble-dry hot, never sun-dry harshly
Washing acrylic
- Water: max 40°C
- Machine washable in a laundry bag on gentle cycle
- Regular neutral detergent is fine
- Can hang to dry; avoid harsh sun; use softener to reduce static and pilling
Blends
Choose the method by fiber ratio: high wool (50%+) follow wool care; acrylic-dominant follow acrylic care. When unsure, choose the gentler option (hand wash, low temperature).
Daily care
- Pilling: remove gently with a fabric shaver — never pull
- Moths: mothballs or cedar blocks in storage
- Reshaping: steam iron on low, 2–3 cm from fabric
- Wrinkles: hang in the bathroom while showering to steam out naturally
- Frequency: woolens need infrequent washing — air out after 2–3 wears
